My favourite, easy to make, face & body scrub.

It’s winter, the central heating is on full blast, & most of us are cooped up at home these days. Cue dry, flaky skin.

Add to the fact that you’re probably not enjoying your usual take-away coffee on the run to work, but instead probably drinking more coffee at home. Cue left over coffee grounds!

Don’t just throw your coffee grounds on the compost. Why not repurpose them into a skin friendly home made scrub.

Use up your waste & help fix that flaky skin = win/win right!

I’m going to share my super easy Coffee Scrub recipe with you, but first let’s discuss how great a coffee scrub is for your skin.

1. Coffee grounds slough away the top layer of dead skin cells (the dry flaky bits) helping to reveal brighter & smoother skin underneath. Use it all over your face & body while you’re in the shower & you will be left with silky soft skin.

2. Coffee may help improve circulation. Studies have shown that caffeine applied to the skin can help to improve blood circulation which in turn helps your skin be nice & glowy.

3. Cleansing & tightening. A coffee scrub not only cleans the dirt & dead cells from the skin but it also tightens it.

4. Coffee may help prevent ageing. Studies have found that coffee grounds can have a protective effect on the skin. Coffee may help prevent wrinkles & fine lines & protect your skin from ageing.

5. Coffee may reduce cellulite. Studies have shown that caffeine could aid cellulite reduction when applied topically to the body.

So how do you make your own homemade coffee scrub?

I like to use this super simple base recipe & then add to it with whatever I fancy at the time, or have to hand. That could be cinnamon powder, essential oils, adaptogen powders or oils, Himalayan or Epsom salts, rose water…. I’m interested to know what add ins you like to use. Let me know in the comments!

Basic Coffee & Sugar Face & Body Scrub

Ingredients

2 tablespoons used coffee grounds, dried

1 tablespoon coconut sugar (could be subbed for regular granulated sugar)

coconut oil

Method

Melt the coconut oil so it is liquid.

In a glass bowl, combine the coffee grounds & sugar, & mix well.

Add in coconut oil, stirring as you go, until you get a nice paste consistency.

Store in a glass jar.

It’s best to use it within a month, but will probably last longer!

Use it in the shower. Be sure to rinse away any residue from the shower/bath!
