TYPES OF COCONUT OIL

We are passionate about coconut oil!

It is such a useful product with so many uses. There are two different types of coconut oil we use. They have slightly different properties making them suitable for different uses. Here we explain what is what and we share some of our coconutty knowledge with you.

VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

This is our signature oil. It is called ‘virgin’ because it is extracted from a single press, from fresh coconut meat.

It is cold pressed so is considered a raw oil.

With its smooth texture and light coconut flavour and aroma, this oil is perfect to use for cooking and baking, great to use on your skin, and can even be ingested straight from the jar, in moderation of course!

How Is Virgin Coconut Oil Made?

Fresh coconut meat from hand picked coconuts is grated and dried for a couple of hours at a temperature lower than 40℃. It is then pressed to squeeze out the oil, which is then filtered through cotton fabric to remove any residue. The oil is then bottled into glass jars.

The whole process is completed within a couple of hours.

As the drying temperature is maintained at less than 40℃ there is no chance for the aroma or flavour to evaporate.

As there is no second press, and the extraction temperatures are low, the yield per kg is much lower than other types of coconut oil. This explains the higher price tag for virgin coconut oil.

DEODORISED COCONUT OIL

Deodorised coconut oil is extracted at a higher temperature than Virgin coconut oil. Steam is used to remove the coconut aroma and flavour.

The higher temperature extraction produces both a higher yield and a more thermally stable oil.

The resulting oil is a great choice to use as the base for our handmade soap and shampoo bars.
