What to expect when you change to a Natural, Sulphate-Free Shampoo Bar

I often hear feedback from people that they have tried using natural shampoo bars but they just can’t get past the transition phase.

In this post I have tried to round up what you can expect when switching to a natural, sulphate-free shampoo bar and how to deal with it.

Here are the most common things you can expect to happen when you make the switch to a natural, sulphate-free shampoo bar:

Your shampoo won't be as foamy

Many people say shampoo bars make you feel as if your hair is not clean. That's probably because of the significantly lower level of suds. Sulphates are what cause traditional shampoos to be so foamy, as salts form from the reaction of sulphuric acid with other chemicals. These sulphates can however make your hair feel dry and brittle as they strip your hair of its natural oils.

Natural, sulphate-free shampoo bars make more of a lather than a foam. Rub the shampoo bar in your hands before applying it to your scalp to gain as many bubbles as possible.

Your hair may be greasier but only at first

One of the best parts about using a natural shampoo bar is that it helps extend the time between hair washes without your hair becoming too greasy. But, it will take some time for that change to happen.

Typically it takes about six washes for most people’s hair to regulate, regain its’ natural balance, and stop feeling greasy. This does vary for each person however so don’t worry if you have a shorter or longer transition period!

Stick with it and if you feel like you need to take the edge off, I recommend you do a vinegar rinse. Check out how to do it here.

Your scalp will be less irritated

It’s likely you will find you have some relief from scalp irritations.

Sulphates can be particularly harmful for people with sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or other inflammatory skin conditions.

Your eyes will also be less irritated as sulphates can create that burning sensation you get when your shampoo gets in your eyes!

So my TOP TIPS:

Give your hair at least six washes to adjust.

Do a vinegar rinse as and when needed.

Remember that while the transition time may not be ideal, it will be well worth it in the end. Natural, sulphate-free shampoo bars are healthier for not only your scalp and hair but for your body as a whole. And the planet and waterways will thank you.
